Paint Your Car <$50

Some pics of people who have painted their own car with Rustoleum and a roller. A pretty simple process requiring sanding and polishing, but the results are fantastic.

This has raised a running thread on another forum since 2006 exceeding 120 pages!

Those results are incredible! You don't even see the marks from the roller. Maybe the airless paint spraying systems or power rollers would be easier to use in this case?

If I had a junker car, I would give this a try. I would think getting the door handles/cracks would be hard.

I painted my car like that back in the early 80s.

Back when Sky Lab was falling back to earth a bunch of people put bullseyes on the roofs of their homes. I put one on the roof of my 1966 Delmont 88

Besides the bullseye for Sky Lab I also had "69" written on both sides and circled. It also said "Insane Coho Lips Anti-Disco Revolution Army" on both sides and the trunk. I wish I had pictures!!

For some reason, I used to get pulled over quite a bit in that car I really got sick of it after I had been pulled over several times with a girlfriend of mine. One night after getting pulled over I asked her what her favorite color was. She replied "blue".

The next day I went to Ace Hardware and bought a roller pan and roller. My next stop was the automotive paint supply shop. I picked up a gallon of dark blue paint and off I went.

I brought all the supplies to my friends house and started at it! I used a brush to cut in around the windows, no masking at all... The roller was used for the rest of the body.

Just a few minutes after I completed the car the mailman drove by. He asked "wasn't that thing white about 10 minutes ago"??? Yup! Sure was!!

Thing is, it actually looked good even without wet sanding. Just a good bit of orange peel texture

As long as you get a good solid coat of paint on that you won't sand through, you can make just about any paint job look good with color sanding, even one done with a roller

Let me guess that while you were painting the car your radio was blairing out on 97.9 The Loop.

I had a neighbor who was a sign painter. One day he decided that his van needed a new color on it so he used what he had the most of. Dark blue it became. He never did any sanding on it and 5 years later it still looked good.

I'm doing the Rustoleum paint job on my off-road Ranger build. I'm using their fluorescent green for trim and wheels, and gloss black for the rest.

If you prefer spray cans, the Rustoleum Professional is SUPER good stuff. WAY better than anything else I've ever tried. Sprays just about as good as a sprayer unit under the right conditions.

I wonder how durable that paint job would be in Chicago weather?

I've read that whole thread (three actually). It's impressive and plan on doing some painting like that sometime in the somewhat near future.

I'd like to try it- I've read it numerous times, I just don't have a suitable project vehicle.

I'll do it someday.

Want to hear a something funny? As an autobody man about the process. He will undoubtedly call BS.

It looks like many people do nice jobs with Rustoleum, so there has to be some truth to it.
