Florida recently passed a law allowing Floridians with concealed-weapons permits to keep firearms locked in their cars at work. The law has a loophole that creates an exception for companies with explosives permits. Disney has taken advantage of the loophole and will not permit their employees or visitors to bring guns into the parking lot. Why the loophole was created in the first place is beyond me.

Needless to say, the NRA is pretty upset with Disney.

The organization issued an alert Wednesday to members under the heading, "Disney Thumbing Nose at the New Florida Gun Law," accusing Disney of being a "prime offender when it comes to firing employees for exercising Second Amendment rights."

I'm not convinced that disciplining employees for possessing unauthozed guns on company property is a bad thing. That Disney is a 'prime offender' may be because of the size of the workforce or perhaps their employees like to pack weapons.

In a memo circulated last week and obtained by the Orlando Sentinel, Disney World Vice President of Public Affairs Shannon McAleavey advised other company executives that, with a few exceptions, "this law does not apply to Walt Disney World Co. owned and leased properties." Consequently, Disney "continues to maintain a zero tolerance policy" for guns. If an employee brings one onto Disney World property without authorization, it could be grounds for termination, the memo states.

In an interview Wednesday, McAleavey said it is a matter of "protecting the safety of our cast and our guests."

Mickey Mouse had his tail between his legs yesterday - after being arrested by police and led away in handcuffs.

Also taken into custody outside Disneyland in Anaheim, Los Angeles, were Cinderella, Snow White, and Tinkerbell.
