National Speed Limit Again

A trial balloon to bring back a national speed limit. Of course that would decrease America's dependece on foreign oil.

Nah, it's easier to insist on drilling in Alaska so that the oil can flow 8 years from now.

Quote:
WASHINGTON - An influential Republican senator suggested Thursday that Congress might want to consider reimposing a national speed limit to save gasoline and, in turn possibly ease fuel prices.

Sen. John Warner, R-Va., asked Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman to look into what speed limit would provide optimum gasoline efficiency given current technology. He said he wants to know if the administration might support efforts in Congress to require a lower speed limit.

Congress in 1974 set a national 55 mph speed limit because of energy shortages caused by the Arab oil embargo. The speed limit was repealed in 1995 when crude oil dipped to $17 a barrel and gasoline cost $1.10 a gallon.

NO!!!!!

55 may be fine in some Eastern states which are totally congested. Out West, where there can be 75 miles between gas stations and towns it just isn't right. 55 is hypnotic on long desolate stretches. It feels as if you could get out and jog next to a car doing 55

Seems like I mentioned this about 6 months ago at the start of the primary campaign season...

Only scary part this time is that a RINO is pushing it. Guess he never got the message that part of the Republican party platform is to get government out of the lives of people -- not into them.

Yeah right... Then why does the Republican Legislature in Arizona get into our lives so damn much??

First state with photo radar on freeways, first state with "smog dog" mobile emissions sniffers, red light cams galore, photo radar on surface streets galore, mandatory seat belt requirements for adults... and on and on...

That's actually a really good question... They are acting much more like liberals or moderates than true conservatives, who typically want to say OUT of other people's business.

Look for a post along these lines of thought in the political section when I have a spare moment. I have some interesting thoughts to bring to the table.
